As the best and biggest HR event in the country, the Society for Human Resource Management Conference may seem a bit overwhelming at first glance – but it doesn’t have to be. SHRM 2017 in New Orleans is right around the corner, and TicketsatWork has this tip sheet to make the most of your SHRM experience, whether you’re a first-time attendee or veteran guest.
1) Prepare a game plan – but also be flexible
Before arriving at SHRM, identify your priorities. Schedule in keynote speakers and sessions you absolutely can’t miss. Stick to your plan as much as you can, but if impromptu meetings come up, go for them! Sometimes spur-of-the-moment opportunities turn out to be the most productive. And don’t forget to save some “me” time, whether that means a cup of café au lait and beignets at the legendary Café du Monde or a leisurely stroll through the French Quarter.
2) Wear comfortable shoes.
Gloria Estefan said it best: “Get on your feet! Get up and make it happen!” This sums up SHRM, where you’ll be walking and standing on your feet for most of the day – and, often, into the night. Comfort trumps fashion when it comes to shoes. Forego the fabulous high heels and go for easy-on-your-feet flats or loafers.
3) Bring your business card – digital and traditional
You never know who you’re going to meet at SHRM – a potential company you’d like to work for or a former colleague to reconnect with. Pack more business cards than you think you’ll need (you can never have enough!) and/or have your digital business cards ready to send out. A host of great apps are at the ready, like SnapDat, which gives you the option of creating multiple business cards to suit different needs, and also to record and store contact information; and CamCard, a multi-purpose app that scans and reads business cards and also has note tools so you can keep track of who you meet and their pertinent details.
4) New Orleans is hot – make sure to hydrate
Although the conference will be held inside, you’ll still instantly feel that famous New Orleans humidity every time you step outside. Beat the heat by staying hydrated. Drink plenty of water and carry a bottle – or two – with you. And if you forget, look around for booths that are giving away water bottles.
